Pets Out of The Ordinary
Most people who keep pets are familiar with the health needs of animals like dogs
and cats. For more unusual pets, you will need to consult
a vet to find out what vaccinations are required. This
is a good safety precaution.
There are several exotic animals, whose bites can spread
diseases such as rabies. People often get bitten by
the animals mentioned below, with possible adverse effects.
Ø Skunks and raccoons are often carriers of rabies in
the wild.
Ø Ferrets can pass on the rabies virus to a person they
bite.
Ø Rodents like gerbils, hamsters, rats and mice do not
pass on rabies but can infect humans with many unpleasant
diseases.
Ø Similarly lagomorphs like rabbits and hares can pass
on diseases besides rabies by biting.
Ø Monkeys are another kind of exotic animal whose bites
can infect the victim. Monkeys do not pass on rabies.
For more information on rabies and animals in your
vicinity that can spread this and other diseases,
get in touch with the local health department in your
area. You can also get guidance from your vet, and
ask him or her what precautions should be taken when
you are travelling with your pet.
